Faculty of Computing and Technology is foreseen to build a newfangled education culture among Sri Lankan universities by reconfiguring academic activities to better connect the world of practice. The faculty believes firmly in linking the student’s classroom learning experience with real-world exposure and applicability in an industry environment, and exposing the students to the industrial environment from early stages of their degree programs.
Accordingly, the 1st year Engineering Technology students were given the opportunity to visit industrial organizations which utilize engineering materials in the production, so as to sense the real insight of materials life cycle from raw materials to the end products and the production processes. During the visits, students have explored the basic criteria for materials selection, design and development of materials, processing, R&D, and latest trends and technologies in the sector, and gathered information to make a baseline assessment of the utilization of the metals, rubber, polymers, minerals, and related engineering materials in the industry.
Students were also privileged to have interactive sessions with the industry experts to acquire awareness on the expectations of the industry from prospective graduates, and also received useful career guidance from numerous corporate leaders. The students were profoundly encouraged by the opportunity and found the experience as a knowledge enrichment and exposure opportunity. The visit also allowed students to envisage what they could expect in future when they become part of the industry.
This inaugural industry visit program of the faculty was very well-received by the industrial sector whereas ten of the Sri Lanka’s leading companies agreed to facilitate the industrial visits for the students. The faculty extends its heartfelt gratitude to the following corporations for providing the students with this invaluable learning opportunity.
