FCT Sets the Standard for Sustainable Infrastructure in Higher Education
The Faculty of Computing and Technology (FCT) at the University of Kelaniya has earned national recognition for its exceptional commitment to sustainability, becoming one of the leading green buildings in Sri Lanka’s higher education sector.
The state-of-the-art facility, located at Bulugaha Junction, Kelaniya, has been awarded the prestigious Platinum Rating by the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka (GBCSL), the highest possible certification for sustainable building practices. In addition, the building has also received the Green Platinum Award under the UDA Blue-Green Sri Lanka Rating System, further solidifying its position as a model for environmentally responsible infrastructure in the country.
These awards recognize FCT’s outstanding performance in multiple areas of green building design, including energy efficiency, water conservation, sustainable materials usage, waste management and indoor environmental quality. Designed with an emphasis on natural lighting, ventilation, and energy optimization, the building minimizes dependence on artificial systems. Solar power integration, rainwater harvesting, and low-energy cooling technologies are just some of the features that contributed to its high sustainability ratings.
The facility also houses a multi-functional laboratory complex equipped with cutting-edge labs for biotechnology, food technology, physics, chemistry, electronics, and more—each designed to operate efficiently while maintaining rigorous environmental standards.
Furthermore, the campus layout incorporates landscaped green zones and eco-friendly construction materials, enhancing biodiversity and reducing the overall environmental impact.
The dual platinum achievements place FCT among the most environmentally advanced academic institutions in the country, inspiring other universities and public buildings to follow suit in adopting green infrastructure standards. As concerns about climate change continue to grow, institutions like FCT are leading the way in showcasing how academic infrastructure can evolve to support environmental goals. The Faculty of Computing and Technology stands as a shining example of how green architecture and education can go hand in hand.
