The Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (CDS-AI) at the Faculty of Computing and Technology serves as a hub for research, projects, and education in data science and AI. Its mission is to advance research in these fields, address industry challenges, and foster collaboration between universities and industry partners. By promoting knowledge exchange, CDS-AI facilitates partnerships in data science and AI research, supporting student projects and aiding their final year research and development initiatives. Additionally, the center aims to broaden AI and data analysis knowledge across the faculty and wider community through seminars, certificate programs, and diploma courses in data analytics and AI.
The overall objectives of the Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (CDS-AI) are as follows:
Advance the field by supporting faculty-led research in data science and AI
Facilitate research opportunities for both postgraduate and undergraduate students in data science and AI
Provide the community with foundational knowledge in data science and AI to enhance general understanding
Apply data science and AI solutions to address industry challenges
Build expertise in data analytics, AI, data mining, preprocessing, visualization, exploration, and digital discovery
Connect with international universities, societies, and research experts to enhance data science and AI research within the faculty and university
Recent Activities
UniHack 2025 marked a significant milestone as Sri Lanka’s first-ever inter-university blockchain hackathon, designed to empower undergraduates to explore, experiment, and create innovative blockchain-based solutions. The event was organized by CoinCeylon in partnership with the Faculty of Computing and Technology (FCT), University of Kelaniya, with the active collaboration of the Computer Science Students’ Association (CSSA) and the Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (CDS-AI) of FCT. This groundbreaking initiative aimed to bridge academic learning with practical experience by providing students a hands-on platform to build real-world applications using the Cardano blockchain.
